What do models wear?

17 Feb

Also:
– Why we look like bag ladies on the tube in the morning
– How we get designers to lend us stuff
– Why we often look nothing like the way you imagined us!

Well, as you seemed to like my ‘what models eat‘ blog so much, I decided to address another few questions I get asked a lot!:)

If you don’t care, scroll down for some insane outfits in incredible locations.😉
123A3253 copy.jpg

Glamour models often arrive fully made-up because as the preferred ‘look’ can be very samey, she knows what the client wants and can arrive ready to shoot immediately. Otherwise, most models are told to arrive as blank canvasses, whether we’re agency-represented or freelance. This means that the sleepy make-up free, scraped-back hair-ed, baggy-trousered suitcase-dragging creature you see at 6am on the tube may well be a model in disguise!
No matter whether we’re fashionable, alternative, pretty and girly or any other style you can think of, the professionals (especially nude and lingerie models) will arrive in baggy outfits because they don’t leave marks on the body, saving the photographer time in photoshop.

Before and after… SIX YEARS AGO!!! I was modelling for the gone but much-missed HMSlatex.

You know when you walk straight past somebody because they aren’t in the place you associate them with? (e.g. walking straight past your karate instructor because they aren’t in whites with a black belt?) I’ve found tying my hair up is the perfect disguise! I’ve lost count of the people who have mailed me saying “I thought I saw you but wasn’t sure…” Another model friend swears by the “Felicity effect”- wearing glasses = incognito!😛
This is Felicity Smoak in Arrow. The glasses are to show you she’s a geek because all geeks on TV must wear glasses.😛 She takes them off and- boom- different person. Apparently.

This is why we look different to the way you imagine us:
It’s funny how often I find that photographers know models from one particular style we shoot, with no idea about the others! (It seems the art-nude and fetish worlds rarely cross paths.) As my art-nude pictures are often ethereal, classically beautiful and pre-Raphaelite inspired, some people can expect a long-skirted romantic to come skipping along.
*sound of New Rocks stomping down the train platform*
The same happens with many of my model friends known for certain looks they do very well- it’s a facet of their personality that they love to express and they’re not only versatile on camera but choose another facet to show off in their everyday world.

Instagram models are a different story as they mostly make a living from their sponsors and advertising. (I wrote a whole blog about the way that works here) That means they have to keep things as consistent with their projected image as possible. It seems like a very easy lifestyle, getting paid simply to take a selfie, but in my opinion there’s far more pressure on Instagram models than freelance models, as even their personal lives have to remain ‘on brand’. Often, what they wear is what they’re paid to wear- and that’s why they’re usually more recognisable in the street than other models.

I’m currently sponsored by Yummy Gummy latex, Orchid Corsetry and Louise Ferdinand Lingerie. Pictures below are Yummy Gummy and Louise Ferdinand- you’ll see Orchid Corsetry later in this post. (Yes I’ve lost weight- the bottom picture was a few years ago, the top was a few months ago).

I once read a rant from a very famous and now retired fetish model, who was sick of new models contacting her asking which photographers pay and which designers lend clothes for free.
“You know what they’re saying to me? I don’t want to work for anything so just give me money and clothes!”
It’s hard as a new model to know where to start and I can understand the temptation to ask more experienced models for all the information but professional models build up working relationships over a long period of time. If you’d like to work with a designer and work towards sponsorship, this will give you a good chance:

1) Prepare your portfolio
Have a lot of good quality pictures that would persuade a designer you are worth working with. If your first shoots are all basic fashion from your own wardrobe, that is no problem at all as long as you look good in them, but think about who you approach. For example, a lingerie designer is unlikely to offer you work if you have no lingerie pictures.
Treat it like a job application. No “hey bayb, wanna shoot?”

2) Stick your neck out
Apply to casting calls for fashion shows and photoshoots. You’re more likely to have the trust of a designer if you’ve actually met them in person! If they have no castings, offer to pay a deposit (and pay it!) This shows you’re serious about taking care of the items. Though I have built a good reputation, I still offer to pay deposits.

3) Be reliable
Give designers your correct measurements. I’ve seen a true fashion show horror story or two! If they need the outfit back by a certain day, make sure it gets sent back in time. If the outfit is damaged, let them know straight away. Accidents happen, but pretending they didn’t and sending back a broken outfit is not cool.I’ve had mishaps myself and the designers appreciated honesty.

It’s always worth an ask- the least somebody can do is say no, and you could have a new and lovely working relationship!😀

It takes a hell of a lot of trust to allow your model to not only borrow your outfit but take it out of the country and into a lot of grimy overgrown places covered in dust, so thankyou so much to Orchid Corsetry, Dead Lotus Couture and Cyberesque for letting me do just that last year.
I worked with photographers Magpie Tommy, James Kerwin and fellow model Jade Stacy Maria in Belgium on an urbex tour. You’ve already seen the nudes, so here are the rest of our shots! Photos are watermarked with the credits.

I love the way different photographers can produce totally different images in the same location. Tom’s is above, James’s are below. Jade and I are wearing Dead Lotus Couture.

We didn’t think we were going to manage this incredible castle location but after a couple of adventures and an uphill scramble, here we were! I’m wearing Orchid Corsetry with a veil made by me. I haven’t forgotten to tell you the thrilling tale but for now, here are some pictures…😉

We were running out of light and I really wish we’d had more time at the location below as there were so many more things I wanted to do! Another time perhaps…😉 Outfit by Cyberesque.
Apparently this bit is called “the rhino” but I think the structures look more like catfish…

And my favourite shooting location of all! I loved the different places for very different reasons but as you all know my love of nature, this was an amazing place to be and to shoot. While Tom and James were shooting Jade, I sat taking close-ups of my own and pretending I was in another strange world.:)

I’m on a few new adventures this year and can’t wait to see where life takes me next. As for today, it’s been a productive one!
– I painted my doors
– Made a lovely smoked mackerel and beetroot salad
– Blogged (yay!)
– Recorded a short story I’m working on
– Am trying my hand at making chia seed pudding for the first time. Wish me luck!😛

More adventures coming your way…

Belgium and the ‘latex brat’!

24 Nov

I completed NaNoWriMo!!! I decided to edit two books I’d already written rather than take on yet another book in a month with two tours in it, but I completed the 50,000 words of editing today and am chilling in bed with tea, diamante and lace (making something for a shoot) and 90s films.

NaNo-2015-Winner-Badge-Large-Square.jpg
See? Did it.

I arrived back from Belgium about 24 hours before the places I had just been visiting were put on lockdown. I’m sending all my love and best wishes to my friends back over there. Stay safe.❤

I was pleased to see a lovely display of openness, generosity and solidarity from Milton Keynes Muslims when I went to town at the weekend. A giant banner with #NotInMyName and people standing ready to chat about life, the universe and everything, even though it was freezing! When I was at school, I remember religious discussions were often led by people we knew (for example our Muslim computer technician who was a familiar face around school and someone we could ask as many questions as we wanted. This was before Islamophobia became rife as far as I know, as this memory is from when I was about eight years old!)
It was nice to share snacks, photos and life stories with open-minded friendly people before my bus arrived.

Here are a couple of my travelling pictures from this Belgium trip!

The view from my shooting apartment in Brussels- the sunset made the buildings opposite look like opals!

I was staying with fellow model Riona Noire, her husband and menagerie of animals (with varying degrees of snuggliness).😀
If you do not know Riona then you should click the link above and look at her, as she is awesome, beautiful and has some top secret projects going on that she can’t talk about. The suspense is killing me!😛

While I was in Antwerp, I shot for KinkyStyle again- yay! Photographer Patrick is always a lot of fun to work with- we rarely plan outfits in advance so both turn up with cases of latex to choose from and bounce ideas around. I really like getting the chance to play different characters and last time we worked together he brought a latex hoodie, a pink top with “BITCH” across it and some fingerless gloves. As I rarely do ‘cute’, I had to try the outfit on…

And it fit!😀

So let me present… THE LATEX BRAT!

😛😛😛

I’m thinking about carrying a few packs of stick-on fake nails to any non-nude shoot- I’d have loved some really pointy pink ones with little bows on them for this set!

This time, we managed five different looks! As I make a lot of my own clothing I wanted to show my own style a little more, so wore a black latex bodysuit with New Rock boots, my holster bag from Jungle Tribe and my homemade Winter coat. No full length pictures yet, so have some selfies!

As it’s past midnight here in England and I’m surrounded by glittery things, I’m going to put the kettle on and sign off! There’s a beautiful rainstorm tonight and I can hear it pounding on the roof.:)

Goodnight all,

ROSWELL xxx

p.s. Are you doing a longterm project that feels like an uphill battle? Spare a thought for this guy! He’d been trying for 6 YEARS to photograph a diving kingfisher… and he finally got it!
I’ve very jealous as there is a kingfisher at the marina and I watched him catch a fish the other day. I have a soft spot for them as I think they’re the closest thing to hummingbirds we have in England- weeny jewel coloured things that squeak.❤

22 May

I’m back! I had one of the best weekends ever in Berlin and it reminded me how glad I feel to have friends all over the world that I’d never have known if not for my modelling work.❤ I’ll post a proper update later but just wanted to share some photos with you now.

Here I am walking for Ardita Fetish Fashion, with a sneak peek from the back of the camera during my shoot with Belinda Bartzner. I am so tempted to buy this dress.❤

And I couldn’t *not* show you this shot of the gorgeous designer Barbara, wearing more of her designs. You can just see me on the right.😀

Though I didn’t get the “Fetish Model of the Year” Award this time (well done though to Sinteque, who did), my sponsor Yummy Gummy latex won “Best International Startup Company”. I’m so proud of her- she’s my latex scientist (I refer to her studio as The Lab) and can’t wait to see what she does next.
Have another sneak preview- I’m wearing my custom-made Yummy Gummy bodysuit and Pandora Deluxe harness.

As I can’t be everywhere at once, sadly, I missed an exhibition I featured in, but can now show you the photos! Photographer Kirsten Thys Van Den Audenaerde shot a project focusing on portraying various fetishes from ponygirl and heavy rubber to bondage and ballet boots. Mine was leather and everything I’m wearing here is from my own wardrobe.😉

So what next? I’m leaving for Ireland on Monday for a week, with an awesome nude shoot in a castle, a sold-out studio day and one day off for wildlife spotting. Irish people, if you know of anywhere near Dublin or Cork that is slightly derelict and/or reclaimed by nature, please let me know.

June is scheduled for some downtime, as this month has been so crazy that I’ve been away from home more nights than I’ve spent in my own bed. I want to get my bathroom looking the way I want it (Cthulhu themed, aqua blue, black and white with a bit of gold) and spend some more time on the roof reading.:)

I may be investing some money into a couple of gorgeous brightly coloured latex catsuits- very exciting, especially for you shiny fashion fans who should be following my facebook- there will be MANY more shiny pictures coming. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roswell-Ivory-model-and-writer/152654844767588

Also, please keep voting! I’m around place 30 and need to be in the top 12 to win another latex catsuit! You can vote EVERY 24 HOURS, remember? http://www.latex.at:80/en/all-models-voting/?id=187
Thankyou.❤

Speak to you soon- I’ll blog again before I leave.

And

Travelling Light…

12 May

Berlin, here I come! I’m off again for a few days celebrating German Fetish Weekend with my ‘industry family’. It’s one of the only chances I get to see people all together as we all live in different countries. (The other time is Dominatrix, in Holland).
I haven’t been for years but have always had a good time… and always seem to model in pink! I’m walking in the show for Ardita Fetish Fashion so am looking forward to seeing what she’s made for me. Maybe she’ll break the ‘pink streak’?😉
I also just heard the lovely news- thankyou so much to all my fans and voters, I am shortlisted for the award of Fetish Model of the Year 2015!

Left: My first GFB, walking for HMSlatex. I’m at 5:10 and 7:02  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WI5R93o50k
Right: Walking for Am Statik, with Luna Eve. We’re at 2:57  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgFVwlM3MiY

For possibly the first time ever, I’m just going to have fun- I haven’t booked any work so that I have total freedom to explore, party and picnic in the Tiergarten (with the resident goshawks, fingers crossed!) This means I’m not dragging the 30kg purple suitcase of doom- hoorah!

I’ve only had a home for just under a year. Before I moved onto my boat, I lived on friends floors, in hostels and the occasional hotel- which I thought was going to be a dream come true! I’m good at travelling, used to sleeping on airport floors and very resourceful. Oh, and I love adventures. The idea of a nomadic lifestyle while enjoying a creative job sounded amazing (and still does if you haven’t factored certain things in…) What hadn’t occured to me was the baggage I’d be taking along. Modelling is my full time job, so I almost always have the purple suitcase of doom attached to my right hand.
There is a huge difference between backpacking all over the world with total freedom to travel and the occasional paying job to keep you going, and constantly moving from hostel to hostel carrying baggage that must not go astray. That heavy weight on my body began to feel like mental weight too and I was sick of it all very quickly. Now, I’m making time to travel without restrictons and excess baggage, so am taking my favoutite latex, some snacks… and that’s it.
I’m also going to Switzerland in July and staying in a hippy/artist commune between shoots.❤

In a total contrast- earlier this year, I shot with Luci-Alice in a gorgeous hotel. I think I look like a fashionable Bond villain here- it seems to be a common theme with me, lol!😀

I’m modelling Kaori’s Latex Dreams and just LOVE the shoulders on the top!

If you’d like to continue supporting me, please pretty please keep voting for me- I’d love to win a latex catsuit!

Beauty in Shadow

14 Apr

I’m back from a lovely sunny few days in Somerset with Anita De Bauch and am now sitting down to catch up on my emails and organise my next tours, which will be Berlin, Ireland, Manchester and Norfolk.

First though, I’d really appreciate your support with a couple of things I’m doing. Pay attention at the back there!😛
1) I’m in a competition to win a custom-made latex catsuit!! (As you may guess, this is something I would love to have.)
All you need to do is click the link here and click ‘vote’. That’s all. No signing up to anything.
http://www.latex.at/en/all-models-voting/?id=187

2) I’m in the running for the award of “Fetish Model of the Year”! If you could please follow the link here and vote me as highly as you think I deserve, that would rock as well! It’s a little less user-friendly- you need to cycle through the pictures, which are displayed at random, but the plus point is that you get to see more beautiful ladies.
http://www.european-fetish-awards.com/fetish-model-of-the-year-2015/

There you go! Any help would be appreciated.
________________________________________________________________________________

So, as the days are getting ever-so-light now, I struggle with conflicting wants and wishes! On one hand, I love the clouded days in which I write with a mocha nearby. On the other hand, I sit on my roof and watch the world go by on sunny days. It’s only then that I can truly get to know the creatures and life around me- and on that note, Mr Toots the kingfisher is back! Apparently he returns on bright days so I’m staking out the bank.

Somerset rolled with the hills, caves and gorges we lack in Milton Keynes and apart from seeing one of my best friends “in her natural habitat”, it was a relief to finally shoot outdoors again without fear that I’d freeze to death! So many lambs everywhere, lovely food, kind people- and we found a slow worm in the garden. Look at her little face!
WP_20150410_18_17_33_Pro
Anita christened her ‘Fern’ and I added ‘The Turbo Snake’- in case she has a complex about being a slow worm. (They are neither slow nor worms- they’re legless lizards.)😉

I also saw pipistrelle bats flittering around at dusk! I couldn’t capture them on my slow phone, but it’s lovely to see them again after what has felt like a long winter. They’re the smallest found in Europe and a friend of mine used to call me a pipistrelle when I was a thirteen year old Goth…  a teeny tiny little bat. Ha ha ha!

Another thing I’m noticing more and more is that the sunsets are drawing out and are even more orange. Despite the Spring frolicking I’m doing at the moment, I can’t help but think it would be perfect for a Film Noir shoot or two in London, or maybe a Milton Keynes underpass. (Just a quick snap taken outside Wagamama…)
WP_20150407_20_05_18_Pro
I love the moodiness and atmosphere of Film Noir shoots! I shot these back in January with David Morley, in Saracen House studio.

A lot of you have been asking about the petition results from my blog “Between My Legs”. Sadly, petitions about Jeremy Clarkson were more popular and now that the general election is upon us, politicians have better things to do- like bitch and moan at each other on National television… I’ll blog properly about the wider issue when I have a little more time, but I promise this is not forgotten.

So, for now I am going to enjoy the light and practise not feeling guilty for being out in the sun. We humans do need our sunlight hours, after all. And when the shadows lengthen, I’ll write my little socks off (when I’m not stretching, that is. I can get my foot under my chin now!)
These were taken by Simon P Shaw last year, in Blackbarn studio and perfectly capture the peaceful kind of darkness.

Until sunrise, people!

p.s. I just got a message from another of my best friends- the olive-skinned gypsy nude model Madame Bink. I’d like to share her blogpost with you- please have a read and see if you can make her smile today.
