What do models wear?

Well, as you seemed to like my ‘what models eat‘ blog so much, I decided to address another few questions I get asked a lot! πŸ™‚

Glamour models often arrive fully made-up because as the preferred ‘look’ can be very samey, she knows what the client wants and can arrive ready to shoot immediately. Otherwise, most models are told to arrive as blank canvasses, whether we’re agency-represented or freelance. This means that the sleepy make-up free, scraped-back hair-ed, baggy-trousered suitcase-dragging creature you see at 6am on the tube may well be a model in disguise!
No matter whether we’re fashionable, alternative, pretty and girly or any other style you can think of, the professionals (especially nude and lingerie models) will arrive in baggy outfits because they don’t leave marks on the body, saving the photographer time in photoshop.

You know when you walk straight past somebody because they aren’t in the place you associate them with? (e.g. walking straight past your karate instructor because they aren’t in whites with a black belt?) I’ve found tying my hair up is the perfect disguise! I’ve lost count of the people who have mailed me saying “I thought I saw you but wasn’t sure…” Another model friend swears by the “Felicity effect”- wearing glasses = incognito! πŸ˜›

This is why we look different to the way you imagine us:
It’s funny how often I find that photographers know models from one particular style we shoot, with no idea about the others! (It seems the art-nude and fetish worlds rarely cross paths.) As my art-nude pictures are often ethereal, classically beautiful and pre-Raphaelite inspired, some people can expect a long-skirted romantic to come skipping along.

The same happens with many of my model friends known for certain looks they do very well- it’s a facet of their personality that they love to express and they’re not only versatile on camera but choose another facet to show off in their everyday world.

Instagram models are a different story as they mostly make a living from their sponsors and advertising. (I wrote a whole blog about the way that works here) That means they have to keep things as consistent with their projected image as possible. It seems like a very easy lifestyle, getting paid simply to take a selfie, but in my opinion there’s far more pressure on Instagram models than freelance models, as even their personal lives have to remain ‘on brand’. Often, what they wear is what they’re paid to wear- and that’s why they’re usually more recognisable in the street than other models.

I once read a rant from a very famous and now retired fetish model, who was sick of new models contacting her asking which photographers pay and which designers lend clothes for free.
“You know what they’re saying to me? I don’t want to work for anything so just give me money and clothes!”
It’s hard as a new model to know where to start and I can understand the temptation to ask more experienced models for all the information but professional models build up working relationships over a long period of time. If you’d like to work with a designer and work towards sponsorship, this will give you a good chance:

1) Prepare your portfolio
Have a lot of good quality pictures that would persuade a designer you are worth working with. If your first shoots are all basic fashion from your own wardrobe, that is no problem at all as long as you look good in them, but think about who you approach. For example, a lingerie designer is unlikely to offer you work if you have no lingerie pictures.
Treat it like a job application. No “hey bayb, wanna shoot?”

2) Stick your neck out
Apply to casting calls for fashion shows and photoshoots. You’re more likely to have the trust of a designer if you’ve actually met them in person! If they have no castings, offer to pay a deposit (and pay it!) This shows you’re serious about taking care of the items. Though I have built a good reputation, I still offer to pay deposits.

3) Be reliable
Give designers your correct measurements. I’ve seen a true fashion show horror story or two! If they need the outfit back by a certain day, make sure it gets sent back in time. If the outfit is damaged, let them know straight away. Accidents happen, but pretending they didn’t and sending back a broken outfit is not cool.I’ve had mishaps myself and the designers appreciated honesty.

It’s always worth an ask- the least somebody can do is say no, and you could have a new and lovely working relationship! πŸ˜€

It takes a hell of a lot of trust to allow your model to not only borrow your outfit but take it out of the country and into a lot of grimy overgrown places covered in dust, so thankyou so much to Orchid Corsetry, Dead Lotus Couture and Cyberesque for letting me do just that last year.

We didn’t think we were going to manage this incredible castle location but after a couple of adventures and an uphill scramble, here we were! I’m wearing Orchid Corsetry with a veil made by me. I haven’t forgotten to tell you the thrilling tale but for now, here are some pictures… πŸ˜‰

And my favourite shooting location of all! I loved the different places for very different reasons but as you all know my love of nature, this was an amazing place to be and to shoot. While Tom and James were shooting Jade, I sat taking close-ups of my own and pretending I was in another strange world. πŸ™‚

I’m on a few new adventures this year and can’t wait to see where life takes me next. As for today, it’s been a productive one!

Wild Thing

I’m getting itchy feet already- it’s a good thing I’m going adventuring again next week! I’ll be doing my famous tennis ball impersonation- zooming South, then North and back South again in just four days. Still- I’m pretty sure pictures and happiness will be forthcoming as I’m going to see Kitty Wood Photography– I have the honour of being one of her bridesmaids this year and couldn’t be more excited.

Blogwise, I can’t believe the response I had to my post about what models eat!! So many shares, so many comments! Thankyou all- and I have now updated the original post with the promised advice from Juliette at Bareskin Beauty. Click here to have a read, and I’ll be back with more modelly advice soon.
For now, I’m writing a mini series of articles about life on a boat for a fantastic feminist/life/opinion website. πŸ˜€ If there’s anything you would like to know, just comment with your question and I’ll make sure I answer it. I’m already covering narrowboat basics, decor for tiny spaces and more.
Despite the title of this post, I’m still feeling quite domesticated; spending my evenings toasting in front of the fire with a stack of books, or painting my doors at long last. At the moment, I’m in love with the artwork the band β€œOf Monsters and Men” use in their videos so I feel there will be wild things coming soon to a wall near me!

It makes me laugh that ‘domesticated’ for me is still kind of strange for a lot of other people- I still run around with no clothes on getting my picture taken and watch the world out of coach, train and plane windows. I still live in an indoor forest (which is swinging around like mad right now- the storm’s howling!) and I still walk around in clothes straight out of your end-of-days Zack Snyder fantasy. On that note, I went to Sweden a while ago. I had a crack-of-dawn flight so pulled a coffee fuelled all-nighter in the airport. Awesome fellow fetish model Psylocke met me off the plane, introduced me to her cats and went for her photoshoot while I got reacquainted with Swedish sweets. One exciting text later and I was off to meet photographer Belinda Bartzner and see a musical about HP Lovecraft… in Swedish. Just so you know, “A Shoggoth on the Roof” rocks- and is pretty easy to understand even when you can only understand the word ‘tentacles’.
The next day (after some world-class sleeping and cat snuggling), Belinda and I worked together for the first time! (She’s since become a good friend so these pictures bring back happy memories).

I’m excited to begin modelling again next week after a long writing-related absence! I have now set up a second blog (yes, really. I’ll tell you more soon!) and finished writing two stories for inclusion in two separate anthologies. (I’ve been a busy lady over here!) πŸ˜‰
I’ve also had time to catch up on some shows and books I never had the time to look at. (Including True Blood- thankyou so much to the wonderful person who sent me series 1. Mail me with your address and I’ll send you a thankyou card!) At the moment, I’m watching a lot of documentaries and TED talks. I hate the name “TED talks”- it stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design but sounds like a cutesy childs’ book about a morally-upstanding stuffed bear. Still, the talks are fascinating- from how the brain works, to fetishes and phobias, to art interpretation.

Even if I didn’t have a diary, I’d know it’s January as I get a rise in personal messages around this time- I’m most often asked how to get into modelling and what my fitness regime is as a curvy woman. I’ve set up a FAQ page for the first question but I’m going to talk about the second one here:

I can’t find any pictures of me wearing yoga pants, laughing and eating salad so instead have a giant selection of toffee apples.

If you Google “what do models…” it will predict that the next word is ‘eat’. (Or ‘really eat’, ‘do’, eat to stay skinny’, or ‘do to work out’). Well, I’ve seen some models eat burgers and fries, others have a very healthy diet with treats allowed, others eat virtually nothing while chugging black coffee and sugar water. (Okay, that was one other- but we all know that’s common in the fashion industry, which I’m glad I’m not part of.)
My point is that models diets are ridiculously varied. If you want to get fit, check out lifestyle tips from personal trainers and dieticians instead. Fitness and health is their business after all! πŸ™‚

I’m naturally very curvy and do not put on muscle easily. I zoom around the planet almost constantly and due to a severe (but manageable) phobia of vomiting, I find eating food in unfamiliar places stressful. You may have a different lifestyle which my way of life would not suit so this advice is mostly for the curious. Still, here is what THIS model eats and does to exercise:

1) My fitspiration
Getting a lean thin body is unattainable for me without a starvation diet and surgery to minimise my curves, so it’s pointless for me to want one! Instead, my ‘fitspiration’ pictures are of curvy toned women so I’m not setting myself up for failure before I even pick the weights up. I hate working out so do short bursts of weights, long walks and yoga/contortion practice. I would be doing martial arts but that doesn’t work with modelling! πŸ˜‰
Advice:
– If you have inspiration pictures of the way you would like to look, think about whether they are attainable. If they aren’t, forget them and find better ones.

– Look at the ridiculous DVD cover below. I am sure the exercises DO help tone your stomach but you will not get results like this. The ‘before’ picture is an unflattering candid shot of her leaning forward and not sucking in. The ‘after’ picture is studio-lit, posed and retouched. You CAN lose weight and tone up if you would like to, but you can’t spot-reduce fat. Also, if you add muscle, you are likely to put on weight rather than losing it. Look at the way your clothes fit, not the scales and not this stupid DVD!Β

2) Starting again
I had a ‘fitness fresh start’ a year ago and booked a consultation with Juliette of Bareskin Beauty to give me a starting point to work from. Juliette specialises in holistic* skincare and nutrition , so I told her everything there is to know about my lifestyle and diet! In return, she gave me a fantastic plan full of advice. While treatments can be expensive this is an investment in the body that needs to last a lifetime, very worth it and I would highly recommend her.
* Treating the body as a whole unit rather than a bunch of separate symptoms.
Advice: If you’re feeling ‘all at sea’, it is worth asking for professional help and support to give you a kickstart.Β 
I also asked Juliette what her top tips are for staying healthy, and here they are!

“I passionately believe that skin and hair vitality comes from within, so nourish the body and you will glow like a goddess from the inside out.

1) If you make one change this year to your diet, eat a rainbow of raw plant-based foods (aka phytonutrients) every day. These sources of antioxidants also contain vitamin C for collagen and elastin production, vitamin A (retinol) for cell health, and sulphur for strong connective tissue.

2) Your digestive system is like the soil that your hair and skin grow in; if the soil isn’t healthy, the plants won’t bloom properly. For perfect health we need a 80:20 split of good and bad bacteria.
21st Century living strips the body of good bacteria and allows bad bacteria to reign supreme leading to a host of health issues and skin concerns. Re-populate the gut with good bacteria by eating and drinking probiotic foods. My favourites include green leafy vegetables, sea vegetables and raw milk. I also take probiotic supplements.

3) Fat is Good! We cannot absorb and utilise nutrients without eating omega 3 fats, which are vital for a healthy brain, heart, nervous system, digestive system, and at a cellular level for effective and healthy cell division. Foods naturally rich in omega 3 fatty acids include dark green leafy vegetables, raw walnuts, wild salmon, flax seeds, free-range eggs. Healthy foods naturally rich in flavonoids include lettuce, cherries and raw chocolate!

4) Processed sugar is the most ageing substance on the planet; it binds with collagen and elastin molecules and literally sucks the life force out of them, reducing the structure and elasticity of your skin. Age and liver spots are formed when sugar and collagen react repeatedly over time. Natural forms of sugar that work in synergy with the body include: raw honey, yacon root syrup, green stevia, dried figs or other dried fruits.

5) I recommend a 6-week trial of a gluten-free diet that excludes wheat, rye, and barley to restore vitality and clear skin. The gluten-containing form of grains that are available today have been so interfered with by the food industry, that the body cannot digest and metabolise them, leading to chronic internal inflammation that will manifest as poor skin and hair loss.

There you go!

We’re human and Krispy Kreme exists so don’t beat yourself up for eating badly occasionally but the more you try to keep a consistently good diet, the less you crave processed things. At least, that’s my experience.

3) What I eat
I experiment with food as much as I can and know that carbs like pasta and bread make me bloat if I eat them too often, so my carbs mostly come from lentils and beans (which give me extra protein too). I eat a tonne of fruit and veg (at least six portions a day) and am mostly pescetarian (no meat except for fish). I drink as much water as I possibly can, am a herbal tea wizard and my favourite treats are coffee ice cream, tortellini and pizza with loads of garlic oil and mozzarella.
Advice:
– ‘Superfoods’ are expensive and once they’ve had their 15 minutes of fame, they’re shoved aside in favour of the new miracle food. We all know fruit and veg are healthy so don’t worry if they’re super. Bright colours- kale, berries (you can buy frozen ones cheaply), spinach, bell peppers etc are all good and you can make a lot using chopped tomatoes as a base.
– Don’t cook veg for too long! It turns to the tasteless mush of school dinner nightmares

– Drink water- it keeps your skin cells plump and hydrated and helps your immune system flush out the bad stuff.

4) Sugar
I try to stick to dark chocolate and fruit and when I cut out other sugars, my tastebuds changed. I now find when I do allow myself to eat anything I want, I don’t want sugary things so much as bread rolls and pate or cheese! Sure, cheese isn’t amazing for me but it’s better than an entire bag of jellybeans.
Advice: Do what you feel works for you- this is just my way. πŸ™‚

5) Saving money
For me, the early months are full of expenditures so I save money in any way I can. Food (especially protein) can be expensive!
Advice:
– buy versatile food like carrots rather than cucumber. You can eat carrots hot or cold, as a snack or in a main meal. Same with celery and bell peppers.
– I’m hugely against factory farming animals so if I can’t buy free range meat for the rare occasions I eat it then I won’t buy meat at all. Tofu, free range eggs, lentils and beans are all high in protein and a lot cheaper than a steak.
– Most things can be eaten after their sell-by date. Due to my phobia, I won’t go more than a day or two and not at all with fish, but check the reduced aisles for things approaching their date and freeze them if you can for later.

One last piece of advice: Always check your spices- garam masala looks a LOT like cinnamon and does not taste as nice in coffee. I speak from personal experience. *shudder*…

Happy slightly-belated Ostara and blessed be to my fellow pagans, Happy Easter to my Christian friends, and Happy International Chocolate Scoffing Day to everyone else. πŸ˜‰

Oh, viewers, I’ve been neglecting you! I had some fantastic news about my writing and so I dropped everything in order to meet a scary deadline. Pleased to say that the deadline was in fact, today and I made it!!! I have finished my second draft (which is the final major draft) of my novel so I can now stop ending entries with “got to go- I’m stuck on Chapter Nine”! πŸ˜‰

So, what other news can I tell you? Well, I’ve lost half a stone and that’s what I’d like to tell you all about today. πŸ˜€
Now, if somebody large enough to be considered unhealthy by today’s society decides to lose weight, the world is in general, supportive. However, as a model and person of about average (maybe a little smaller than average) size, I find that if I mention toning up, losing weight or exercising, I find myself fielding the same questions on a regular basis. Now, I could rant, but as I’ve already had one of those recently and am feeling happy today, I’m going to take the time to have a chat about it all…

“What diet are you following?”
I do not believe diets promote sustainability so what I have done is change my entire lifestyle:
– Exercise as many days as possible (if it’s a busy day, leave it and don’t feel bad)
– Drink more water
– Begin each day with a green smoothie.
– Cut down on dairy significantly
– Cut out sweet things entirely, with the exception of fruit.

“Is this due to industry pressure?”
Yes, and no.
I am capable of quite surprising greed. (I do not mean ‘three chocolates and a diet Coke”- I mean I am capable of eating an entire tub of ice cream in one go. Not that I do this any more, but I have been known to. Mostly as a student…) Ignoring the potential weight gain for a moment, this is not a balanced or healthy way of living. When I’m writing, I spend all day on my butt in front of the computer and get no exercise at all, which is also less-than-healthy. Therefore, no. I’m doing this for me.
However, I see nude pictures of myself almost daily which form a relatively accurate ‘size diary’. If I am untoned, I do not find myself as attractive as when I am toned. I am naturally very curvy with large muscular thighs, therefore I will usually be bigger than most models I am paired with. As long as I am toned and healthy like a comic book heroine, I can accept this. However, if my muscles are hidden under a little bit of fat and I’ve eaten badly all month, then of course I feel self-conscious. In this way, yes- I am doing this so I look better in my images and I do not feel this is a bad thing.

“You don’t want to look like Kate Moss, do you?”
If I wanted to resemble Kate Moss, I would snort my bodyweight in cocaine, stop giving the impression I have any grey matter between my ears and purr “get the London look” at regular intervals. (Not a Moss fan here- can you tell?) πŸ˜‰
In all seriousness though, I am losing fat in order to show off the toned muscles underneath. I am not trying to change my body shape. I have breasts, a bum and thighs. Unless I became very very ill, this would not change no matter how thin I got.

“But you’re beautiful as you are!”
That is so very kind of you, and thankyou! I really do appreciate the sentiment, but I would like to be a little- just a little- smaller, and so I am working hard to achieve that.

Most people who spend a lot of time online know about what people like Dawn Porter call “that SHOCKING trend for… ugh… ‘thinspiration’. Oh… oh my god, I can’t BELIEVE IT!” Basically, it is inspiration for people with eating disorders- words, pictures, GIFs etc that encourage unhealthy weight loss.
However, I discovered FITspiration by accident a little while ago and have enjoyed following blogs and saving images ever since. It is what I would call an antidote to thinspiration- promoting health and exercise over weight loss, though there are some good weight loss ones too. I’d like to share some of my “fit folder” images with you.
